A Klondike Derby is an all day event where teams of Scouts build a Klondike sled (looks like a dog sled) and pull/push the sled around to various stations. Each station will have a challenge for the team to complete. Teams are scored based on their results. Examples of challenges include: build a fire and boil water in lowest time, complete a rescue of a Scout with a simulated injury, compass and map use, demonstrate knife and saw use.
At the end of the day there is a banquet indoors where trophies and prizes are handed out to winning teams. All teams receive a participation crest.
There are currently two derbies we could enter, one on Feb 6th (Carp) and the other on Feb 13th (Fitzroy Harbor). I'm currently targeting the one of the 13th in order to give us the most time to prepare.
Cost: Approx $15 per youth + cost of food for lunch (Scouts cook their own lunch).
Time: This is an all day event + dinner so expect to be there from approx 9am - 7pm.
For those that commit, we will be using some or all of the upcoming meetings to build the sled(s) and practice required skills.
Here's a collection of videos from a derby in Wakefield in 2014 to give you an idea of what to expect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD95vMWkbeQ&list=UUV7YqIsI2sQXDI0_5gJNJtg&index=6
